India clocks record foodgrain production in 2018-19

The country registered record food grain production in 2018-19 clocking 285.17 million tonnes, which is slightly higher than foodgrain output of 285.01 million tonnes in 2017-18. As per the final estimate for 2018-19 released by agriculture ministry, the country achieved record production of rice and wheat at 116.48 million tonnes and 103.60 million tonnes respectively. The production of coarse grains and pulses, however, are slightly down from 2017-18 at 43.06 million tonnes and 22.04 million tonnes.

The production figures in the fifth and final estimate has been upwardly revised from fourth advance estimate. In the fourth advance estimate, the foodgrain production was estimated 284.95 million tonnes. Similarly, the production of rice and wheat has also been upwardly revised to set new records. However, the production estimates of pulses have come down from 23.40 million tonnes in fourth advance estimates to 22.04 million tonnes in the final estimate.

Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the target of pulses production for 2019-20 is 26.30 million tonnes.

Ernakulam KVK to promote native poultry breeds, eggs

Ernakulam Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is set to ensure availability of authentic desi poultry in urban homes of the city.

The KVK will collect one-day-old chicks from organic poultry farmers after ensuring the purity of the native breed of the poultry and will distribute these through its sales counter located at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute.

In a first step of this initiative, KVK formed a group of desi poultry farmers in the district and a self-help group.

Andhra Pradesh to set up agency to supply renewable energy for agriculture, aquaculture

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to set up Andhra Pradesh Green Energy Corporation Ltd (Apgecl) with a mandate to provide power free to agriculture consumers and at subsidised rates to aquaculture.

State Minister for I&PR Perni Venkataramaiah said, the Cabinet decided to form this new corporation to take care of renewable power to supply free power for nine hours in the day time to the agricultural sector through solar power.

It is proposed to bringabout 10,000 MW under its fold to supply free of cost to farmers and at a subsidy to the aqua farmers. The Union Ministry for New and Renewable Energy provides a financial assistance of 20 lakh per MW.

The State plans to utilise this facility for the establishment of solar power projects.
