Sugar production is close to 17 mn tonnes, 23 per cent lower than last year

Sugar mills in the country have produced nearly 170 lakh tonnes (lt) of sugar till February 15, about 22.7 per cent lower than about 220 lt sugar produced in the corresponding period of the previous sugar season, a statement from Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said on Tuesday.

Currently, 426 mills are crushing sugarcane, compared with 502 sugar mills as on the corresponding date in the last sugar season. India’s sugar season runs from October to September. Besides, 23 mills have already stopped crushing operation due to non-availability of sugarcane, as against 19 on the same date last year.

Spot rubber fall weak

Spot rubber was weak on Monday. RSS 4 slid to 137.00 (137.50) a kg according to traders and the Rubber Board. The grade dropped to 133.00 (133.50) a kg as quoted by the Dealers. Meanwhile ISNR 20 and latex continued to remain neutral amidst scattered transactions. The volumes were dull.

The March futures declined to 137.83 (138.43) and April to 141.07 (141.58) per kg while the May futures improved to 143.98 (140.22) per kg on the Indian Commodity Exchange (ICEX).

The near month March contracts were down by 0.43 per cent with a volume of 586 lots and total trade value of 807.62 lakhs.

Maharashtra mills crush 390 lakh tonnes of sugarcane to produce 423 lakh quintals of sugar

Maharashtra’s sugar mills crushed 390.82 lakh tonnes of sugarcane by February 13 this season, producing 423.42 lakh quintals of sugar with an extract rate of 10.83. Data available with the Maharashtra Sugar Commissioner’s office reveals that 77 cooperative and 66 private sugar mills (total 143 mills) have started crushing this year. Eight mills in the State are yet to begin crushing operations.
