India’s Farm Sector Growth May Reach 3.1 percent in Current Fiscal: NITI Ayog

“Role of the private sector in the Indian agriculture sector has to come in a big way, I feel today we need more competition in agriculture, more investment and the face of agriculture from traditional to modern and movement of agriculture from present stage to higher evolution will not happen without the active involvement of private sector. Unless we increase the corporate sector’s investment and involve them from seed and continuing it up to the sale, it would be difficult to cause a breakthrough in the growth of agriculture and doubling farmers’ income”, he added.

US-Iran stand-off hits Russian buying of orthodox tea from Kochi

Geopolitical tensions following the stand-off between the US and Iran seem to have impacted the offtake of orthodox tea varieties from Kochi auctions this week.

The entire quantity of 9,000 kg of orthodox tea offered in Sale No 3 remained unsold and traders attributed this to reduced offtake by Russia in the last fortnight. Russia is a major buyer of South Indian orthodox tea and this particular variety finds markets in Iran as well from there.

Maharashtra govt sets up panel to extend relief to farmers with loans of over 2 lakh

The Maharashtra government has appointed a sub-committee to study and recommend an appropriate scheme for farmers having overdue of short-term crop loan/restructured crop a loan above 2 lakh and for those who have repaid their crop loan on time.

In December, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced a crop loan waiver with an upper ceiling of 2 lakh. However, later the GR was issued stating that loans up to 2 lakh taken between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2019 and which have not been repaid till September 30, 2019 will be eligible for the waiver. Farmers, whose crop loan and restructured loan is more than 2 lakh will not be eligible for any benefit under the scheme, it added.
