Contest for white areca de-husking machine
The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, which conducted programmes to train youths in arecanut tree climbing in 2018 and 2019, has set its eyes on devising a machine to remove husks from white arecanut. It has invited entries for a competition.
Peeling the husk off is a laborious task in areca processing, which requires manual labour.
SN Khandige, Vice-President of Campco, told BusinessLine that though some farmers have devised machines for the purpose, they are not very efficient. Considering this, Campco is organising a competition on developing a machine that can remove husk from white arecanut and provide quality output to farmer. The competition is an effort to encourage new ideas in farm mechanisation.
West Bengal emerges at the top in vegetable production
West Bengal has overtaken Uttar Pradesh and emerged as the top State in vegetable production in 2018-19, the data presented at a recent horticultural meeting showed.
According to the State-wise horticulture production data released at a conference organised by the Agriculture Ministry last week, West Bengal produced 29.55 million tonnes (mt) of vegetables last year against 27.70 mt in the year before. Vegetable production in UP, which held the numero uno position earlier, came down to 27.71 mt in 2018-19 from 28.32 mt the previous year.

India is still in the early days of transition from a production-driven supply chain to a demand-driven value chain. The change in consumers’ diet composition and the emerging business opportunity will help drive the transition faster, moving forward.
According to S Sivakumar, Group Head, Agri and IT Businesses, ITC, a large part of Indian agriculture is still being driven by traditional and archaic production systems, which is impeding the next phase of agricultural growth.
