In AP, mangoes will now go from ‘farm to family’

As the lockdown disrupts the supply chain and farmers are saddled with mangoes, a JICA-supported initiative, ‘Farm to Family’, is attempting to reduce their woes by connecting them with consumers in Hyderabad’s gated communities.

Mangoes will be collected directly at the farm gate and supplied to the consumers in a few select townships and gated communities in Hyderabad.

Though the farmers witnessed good production in some areas, they are not in a position to harvest it as the regular traders have not shown interest because of the supply chain disruptions and closure of markets across States due to the nationwide lockdown.

Vegetable farmers in Nilgiris rue low prices, want Govt to fix MSP

Vegetable growers in the Nilgiris are a worried lot, for even while the Government has permitted the movement of essential commodities (including vegetables) during the lockdown 2.0, as the prices they realise are ‘pathetic’.

“There have been ups and downs in the past, but never like this,” says R Rangaswamy, President of Niligiris Potato and Vegetable Growers Association.

This deadly virus has resulted in labour shortage, disruption in supply chain – both for taking the produce to the mandi, as well as attending to farm lands and general slackness in trade activities, he said.

Weak La Nina, negative IOD will together underwrite normal monsoon

The normal rainfall outlook for India and South Asia this year is predicated on a weak La Nina emerging in the Equatorial East Pacific and an associated weak negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) during the latter part of the season (August-September).

“We are looking at a situation where we will have a weak La Nina in the Equatorial Pacific, which can be favourable for the monsoon, and a weak negative IOD closer home, which is not so good. Each tends to cancel out the other’s overbearing influence on the monsoon, and hence the overall normal rainfall outlook,” says DS Pai, Head, Climate Research and Services, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune. Pai has authored many of the Indian monsoon long-range forecasts.
