1.15 lakh acres added under Kaleswaram irrigation scheme

The mega Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) saw another important link commissioned at Siddipet in Telangana.

The multipurpose mega-irrigation project uses Godavari river water to irrigate about one crore acres under new ayacut while also stabilising the cropped area earlier supplied through existing irrigation projects.

A pet project of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, the Kaleswaram project is under development to transform Telangana into Haritha Rashtram or a green state.

In AP, mangoes will now go from ‘farm to family’

As the lockdown disrupts the supply chain and farmers are saddled with mangoes, a JICA-supported initiative, ‘Farm to Family’, is attempting to reduce their woes by connecting them with consumers in Hyderabad’s gated communities.

Mangoes will be collected directly at the farm gate and supplied to the consumers in a few select townships and gated communities in Hyderabad.

Though the farmers witnessed good production in some areas, they are not in a position to harvest it as the regular traders have not shown interest because of the supply chain disruptions and closure of markets across States due to the nationwide lockdown.

1,000 tonnes of jute seeds meant for export to Bangladesh stuck at border

Poor farmers in Bangladesh, in all likelihood, will be able to sow jute across 25 to 30 per cent less area this year, as the local administration in North 24 Parganas district, where a major land port is located, is in no mood to allow export of jute seeds to the neighbouring country.

As many as 50 trucks carrying nearly 1,000 tonnes of jute seeds have been lying stuck at Petrapol Land Port in Bangoan in North 24 Parganas district, despite the clear directive from the Central government permitting movement of seeds and other planting materials. Indian exporters whose consignments are stranded at the border since the announcement of the nation-wide lockdown on March 24 are worried because the jute sowing season in Bangladesh is drawing to a close.
