ISMA raises sugar output estimate to 26.5 mt for 2019-20
The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) on Tuesday upwardly revised the country’s sugar output estimate for marketing year 2019-20 (October to September) to 26.5 million tonnes (mt), from the earlier estimate of 26 mt.
But the production will remain nearly 18 per cent lower than that of the previous year, as heavy monsoon rains and floods have hit cane yield, mainly in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Telangana’s foodgrain output zooms on back of bumper paddy
Telangana’s foodgrain production has shot up in 2019-20. According to the first Advance Estimates, the total foodgrain production would be a record 130 lakh tonnes, including 99 lakh tonnes of rice (converted from 148 lakh tonnes of paddy).
Foodgrain output showed a growth of 40 per cent over the previous year’s production of 93 lakh tonnes. The tally is more than the five-year average production of 83 lakh tonnes.
Despite a dismal start to the agricultural season, Telangana has reaped a bumper harvest this year, with paddy leading the table with a 48 per cent growth in output.

The rapidly spreading coronavirus is set to dent India’s castor oil exports as uncertainty looms large over Chinese purchases in the backdrop of the coronavirus outbreak.
Industry experts have expressed fears of continued dip in castor oil exports this year. During the last calendar year, India’s castor oil and derivatives exports were hit by economic weakness in China, causing a decline in exports to the tune of about 9 per cent over 2018.
