Portal for real-time monitoring of TOP crops launched
Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Wednesday launched a portal that will forecast wholesale prices of three key vegetables – tomato, onion and potato (TOP) – for three months and enable the government to monitor the supply situation for timely market interventions in case of a price crash during a glut.
The Minister said that the Market Intelligence and Early Warning System (MIEWS) is designed to provide advisories to farmers to avoid cyclical production as well as an early warning in a glut situation. She said the portal will enable the government come up with a rapid response in times of glut and move products to deficit regions. It will also help provide inputs for export and import decisions.
PM-Kisan scheme: Fisheries Ministry seeks inclusion of fishermen for benefits
The fisheries ministry has sought inclusion of fishermen in the PM-KISAN scheme, which gives Rs 6,000 annually to farmers in three equal instalments.“There are around 20 million fishermen, who need direct income support. They work in shared boats and own nothing, not even land. We have requested government to include fishermen in PM-KISAN scheme, the way government has allowed fishermen credit facility through Kisan Credit Card (KCC),” said an official of the fisheries ministry.
Government lifts ban on onion exports
The government has decided to lift ban on export of onions in view of bumper crops. Food and consumer affairs minister told ET that the lifting of ban will help farmers get good prices as the March harvest is over 40% more than last year at 40 lakh tonnes.
“Prices have now stabilised and crops are reaching mandis in large quantities. So further ban on onion will put prices under pressure,” he said.
The government had imposed ban on onions in September last year when the prices of the bulb had crossed Rs 150 per kg in some retail markets. The government also had imposed stock limit and imported onions from Egypt, Afghanistan and Turkey to tame the prices.
