Utkal Tubers to ramp up production of high yielding seed potatoes
KOLKATA: Bengaluru-based potato seeds firm Utkal Tubers India plans to ramp up its annual production to 50,000 tons of high-yielding, disease-resistant seed potatoes across Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, UP, Haryana and Karnataka over the next three years.
In 2019, Utkal produced 4,800 tons of high-yielding disease-resistant potato seeds across 450 acres of farmland in India. The company now plans to increase the production by investing in research and development, introducing new high-quality proprietary varieties of seeds and utilizing technology advancements like cocopeat and aeroponics technologies for seed multiplication.
Poor demand, weak prices hit farm exports in April-October
Basmati rice shipments down 10%; buffalo meat lower by 13.5% India’s farm produce exports have seen a sharp decline in the first seven months of the current financial year on weak demand and poor realisations. The total value of shipments including major products such as basmati rice and buffalo meat fell 16 per cent in dollar terms to $8.8 billion in April-October, against $10.5 billion in the same period last year.
In rupee terms, the shipments were down 15 per cent to ₹61,681 crore (₹72,523 crore in same period last year), according to the latest figures released by the Agricultural and Processed Foods Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Commerce Ministry.
Golden Rice Gets Biosafety Approval For Direct Use as Food & Feed or For Processing
The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Plant Industry has granted a biosafety permit for direct utilization of vitamin A-enriched rice variety – Golden Rice as food & feed or for processing (FFP).
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) announced the FFP approval yesterday (18 December 2019), saying that the Golden Rice ‘has been found to be as safe as the conventional rice’ after thorough biosafety assessment.
