Haryana approves 40 horticulture projects
CHANDIGARH: In the 32nd State-Level Executive Committee meeting of Haryana State Horticulture Development Agency, held at Chandigarh today, 40 horticultural projects were approved with an aim of increasing income of farmers.
The meeting was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare department Mr. Sanjeev Kaushal.
It was informed that a total of 14,776 farmers have availed benefits under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Sugar Beet – An Alternative to Sugarcane
The two tenders floated by oil marketing companies (OMC) for procurement of ethanol during Ethanol Supply Year (Dec 2019 to Nov 2020), mills & standalone distilleries have offered to supply 1630 million litres (ML) of ethanol, of which 103.8 ML will come from cane juice, 625.8 ML from ‘B’ heavy molasses, 863.9 ML from ‘C’ heavy molasses and 37.8 ML from damaged food grain. According to ISMA DG, Abinash Verma, the supply of 730 ML of ethanol from cane juice and ‘B’ heavy molasses is double of what was supplied in ESY 2018-19. As such, the diversion of sugar into ethanol is higher. There is another tender expected shortly from the OMCs, against which more quantities of ethanol are expected to be offered to the OMCs for 2019-20 ESY.
The negative impact on sugar production owing to ethanol diversion during the entire season will be limited to nearly 850,000 tonnes only.
Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture in Maharashtra & Gujarat
The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Pune organized a Review Workshop on “Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) for KVKs of Maharashtra and Gujarat” at Kolhapur.
The Chief Guest, Dr. K. Narayan Gowda, Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru accentuated to identify the willing rural youths, empowering them for taking up the various agricultural and allied sector enterprises, orienting towards entrepreneurial skill development for sustainable income and gainful employment. He expressed his concerns on less interest of rural youths in agriculture. He stated that making farming as a profitable area is a more challenging task. He urged to fill up the vacuum of farming in the rural areas. Dr. Gowda urged for identifying the enterprises as per locality’s’/villagers’ demands, required inputs and market. He also opined for exploring the financial support from the other agencies for the sustenance of the enterprise.
