Gobar-Dhan Yojna
The GOBAR-Dhan Yojana aims to collect cattle waste and solid waste from farmers for sale to entrepreneurs, who there after, will produce manure, biogas and bio-CNG from the waste. “The scheme will connect farmers to buyers so that farmers can get the right price for dung and agricultural waste,” The plan will be launched in April 2018.
Gobar-Dhan Yojana (also known as Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resource Fund scheme) aims to improve
lives of the villagers. Under it, solid waste of dung and fields will be changed into compost, biogas and bio-
CNG. Nearly 5000 gaushalas with an average of over 400 cattle to be included and 621 registered dairires to be covered. The government, with the GOBAR-Dhan Yojana, aims to produce cleaner fuels, eventually
leading to a shift to biogas and bio-CNG.
The 19th Livestock Census 2012 pegs the total cattle and buffalo population in India at nearly 300 million,
resulting in the generation of 3 million tonnes of cattle dung per day. In the first phase, 300 Open
Defecation Free (ODF) districts will be covered by December, 2018, while the rest will be covered by
October 2019.
