Potato prices slump 23% in 10 days; soya oil 6% costlier

Prices of the potato have crashed by 23% in ten days as traders who were holding on to their stock in anticipation of further rise in prices have started offloading them.

However, prices of soyabean oil – as much ubiquitous in Indian households as potato – have increased almost 6% in the same period as edible oil players have not imported much of soyabean oil in anticipation that farmers will offload good stocks of harvested soyabean in the market.

Prices of potato had soared this year and many traders had not offloaded the tuber in anticipation of further rise. They started releasing the stock as prices remained at a steady level, trade insiders said.

Tea Board seeks Rs 1000 cr industry support for next five years

The Tea Board has sought an assistance of Rs 1000 crore for the industry in the next five years starting 2022-23.

Chairman of Tea Board Saurav Pahari said that in the budget submitted to the commerce ministry, the focus has been on handholding the small tea growers (STGs) which contribute to 52 per cent of the total production in the country.

“We have sought an assistance of Rs 1000 crore in the budget submitted to the ministry for a period of five years starting 2022-23,” Pahari told reporters after the AGM of the Indian Tea Association (ITA) here on Thursday.

India’s wheat planting gathers momentum, acreage up nearly 10%

Indian farmers have planted wheat on 4.5 million hectares since Oct. 1, when the current sowing season began, up 9.7% from a year ago, the latest data from the farm ministry showed on Friday.

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare will keep updating the provisional crop sowing figures as it gathers more information from state governments.

In India, wheat is mainly produced in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
