Country set for record rabi cereal harvest: Report

Extremely good rainfall received during the monsoon period and subsequent months will help the country to harvest a record 110 million tonnes (mt) or more of wheat, according to projections by two different private agencies.

While the firms —private weather forecaster Skymet Weather Services and National Collateral Management Services Ltd (NCML) – projected that wheat output would be much higher than the 102.19 mt projected for 2018-19 in the 4th advance estimates, their assessments differed on two major rabi crops—Bengal gram and mustard. While Skymet said the output of both the commodities would higher than that in the last year, NCML’s projections were contrary to it.

Rabi crops account for nearly 50 per cent of India’s total foodgrain production.

Indian potato processing sector is top of menu for Dutch processing machinery suppliers

Government’s push for value-addition aimed at doubling of farm income attracts more foreign players

Looking at the pace at which Indian farmers are moving towards growing potato varieties that suit the processing sector, Dutch potato processing machinery suppliers are increasingly queuing up to tap the promising processing market in India.

Additionally, what has fuelled excitement among foreign processing machinery suppliers is the push from the government, which has relaxed the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the food processing sector to 100 per cent, with the aim of doubling farmer incomes by promoting processing industries.

At the ongoing 3rd Global Potato Conclave at Gandhinagar, global leaders in engineering process lines for potato processors Kiremko BV, has shown its intent to build a facility in India to make processing equipment.

‘Hybrid rice cultivation still negligible in India’

The area under hybrid rice cultivation has not made big headway due to lack of supportive infrastructure, huge disparity in commodity prices (offered by millers and commission agents), inadequate government procurement infrastructure and the lack of investment in R&D to improve taste and cooking quality, according to a Bayer official.

Just around 3 million hectares out of the 43 million hectares under rice cultivation is said to be hybrids.
