Government buys record wheat crop of over 400 lakh ton at MSP for Rs 79,088 crore

The Centre on Friday said it has procured a record 400.45 lakh tonnes of wheat in the current marketing year that started in April, costing exchequer Rs 79,088 crore. The record procurement of wheat has been achieved amid farmers’ protests at Delhi borders since late November 2020. Farmer unions are demanding a repeal of three new farm laws and a legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Procurement of Wheat in ongoing RMS (Rabi Marketing Season) 2021-22 is continuing smoothly in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir at MSP, as was done in previous seasons.

Wheat purchases top record 40 million tonnes

This year so far, wheat worth ₹79,088.77 crore has been procured benefiting over 42 lakh farmers

India’s wheat procurement for the first time crossed 40 million tonnes (mt) on Friday and is well on its way to meet the target of 427 mt.

Basmati rice exporters say the recent move by some western Asian nations to tighten pesticide residue norms for Basmati rice without prior intimation will hit India’s export of the commodity and affect thousands of farmers in the country.

Oman, Egypt, Jordan UAE and Saudi Arabia are among the nations which have adopted pesticide residue norms at part with those in the European Union (EU).
