Kashmir saffron gets Geographical Indication tag

Department of Agriculture Kashmir has been granted Certificate of Registration by Registrar of Geographical Indication, Chennai, Government of India for Kashmiri saffron, as per media reports.

The registered proprietor of the Kashmir saffron is Director Agriculture, Kashmir, facilitated by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology SKUAST (K) and Saffron Research Station Dusso Pampore J&K.

Commenting on the achievement, Director Agriculture, Kashmir, Altaf Aijaz Andrabi said that Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign on products that have a specific geographical origin and the product may have special quality or reputation.

Skymet estimates record 113.66 million tonnes of wheat output

Skymet Weather Services, a private weather monitoring and Agri-risk solutions company has estimated that the wheat production this year would be around 113.66 million tonnes – 9.7 percent higher from last year’s production of 103.60 million tonnes.

In a report on Rabi crops outlook, the Skymet estimates the output of Bengal gram would be at 10.74 million tonnes – 8% higher than the last year’s production of 9.94 million tonnes.

“Rapeseed and Mustard production is at 9.50 million tons which is 2.7% up the last year’s production estimates of 9.25 million tonnes,” the report says.

CSIR’s Kisan Sabha App to connect farmers to supply chain

India’s ongoing lockdown has threatened the agriculture sector as it overlaps with the time of harvest. In the present situation of COVID-19, farmers are looking for help in taking their produce to the market, as also in procuring seeds, fertilizer, etc. from the market. A robust supply chain management is urgently required to facilitate the timely delivery of the produce at the best possible prices.

The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a CSIR lab, has come up with an app called Kisan Sabha to resolve the problems related to the agricultural supply chain. The App was remotely launched today by Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra. The primary objective of Kisan Sabha is to connect farmers to supply chain and freight transportation management system.
