CWC, FCI asked to monetise warehouses in urban areas

Food Secretary tells them to tap demand from e-commerce firms

To tap the growing demand for warehousing from e-commerce firms, Union Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey on Friday exhorted the Food Corporation of India and the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) to monetise their assets in the urban areas.

Inaugurating the CWC’s 3.5 lakh sq ft Grade A Warehouse at the IT SEZ near Bengaluru International Airport on Friday, Pandey said e-commerce companies need warehouses in urban areas.

India’s spices exports have crossed $4 billion over the past two years and demand is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5 per cent. This offers a huge opportunity for exports, said D. Sathiyan, Spices Board Secretary.

Spices exports contribute around 10 per cent of agriculture exports and about 40 per cent of horticulture sector exports. India’s exports form only 15 per cent of production and the balance is consumed in the domestic market, he said.

Eyes export market for ghee in West Asia

Godrej Jersey, the dairy business of Godrej Agrovet, has expanded milk procurement in Maharashtra and is eyeing export markets in the Middle East for value-added products like ghee.

“We have entered into Maharashtra for milk collection in a big way in areas closer to Hyderabad as there is a shortage of milk in Telangana” said Bhupendra Suri, CEO, Godrej Jersey.
