Important Terminologies In Agriculture Meteorology Pdf
➢ Meteorology- Greek word “Meteoro” means ‘above the earth’s surface’ (atmosphere) “logy” means ‘Indicating science’. Branch of science dealing with that of atmosphere is known as Meteorology. The study of weather is called ‘meteorology’.
➢ Weather: Physical state of the atmosphere at a given place and given time. Eg. Cloudy day
➢ Climate: Long term regime of atmospheric variables of a given place or area. Eg. Cold season
➢ Agriculture Meteorology-A science concerned with the application of meteorology to the measurement and analysis of the physical environment in agricultural systems.
➢ Lapse Rate – The decrease in air temperature with height is known as the normal / environmental lapse rate and it is 6.5°C/km.
➢ Solar Constant: The average amount of solar radiation received by the Earth’s atmosphere, per unit area, when the Earth is at its mean distance from the Sun. It is equal to 1370 watts per square meter or Value is 1.94 cal / cm2 / min. It fluctuates by as much as ± 3.5 % about its mean value depending upon the distance of the earth from the sun.
➢ Albedo: is a measure for reflectance or optical brightness (Latin albedo, “whiteness”) of surface Albedo Values-Pure water – 5-20%, Vegetation 10-40%, Soils 15-50%, Earth 34-43% and clouds 55%.
➢ Photo morphogenesis: Change in the morphology of plants due to light. This is mainly due to U.V and violet ray of the sun.
➢ Temperature Inversion: Occasionally at some altitude the temperature abruptly increases instead of decreasing. This condition in which this abrupt rise instead of fall in temperature occurs in the air is known as the temperature inversion.
➢ Heat Units: A heat unit is the departure from the mean daily temperature above the minimum threshold temperature Usually ranges from 4.5 to 12.5 ºC for different crops (Most commonly used value is 6.0ºC)
➢ Degree Day: A degree day is obtained by subtracting the threshold temperature from daily mean temperature. Summation of the daily values over the growth period gives degree days of the crops. ➢
