Tractor power outlets study of PTO and standards

Tractor power

A tractor is used to power stationary equipment such as threshing crops, pumping water from tube wells, and so on, in addition to hauling tools for tillage operations, planting of various crops, and so on.

▪At the back of most tractors, there is usually a power outlet. Power Take Off is the name of the power outlet (PTO). For a long time, tractors have been equipped with a PTO.

In India, the PTO is normally located on the back side of the machine, although in industrialised nations, a front PTO is also available for operating front-mounted equipment.

▪The gear box provides power to the PTO shaft.

▪The PTO outlet is normally the counter shaft of the gear box, which is extended out to the back side.

▪The standardisation of the PTO speed is necessary so that the equipment may be developed around it.

▪The threshers, for example, are meant to run at a specific threshing cylinder peripheral velocity.

▪The pulley configurations are designed to work with a typical PTO speed.

▪The normal PTO speed before to 1958 was 536 rpm. Later, this speed was adjusted to 540 rpm, and a new speed, 1000 rpm, was added to the requirements.

▪The splines on the PTO out shaft are likewise different, preventing the connection of an implement with a different speed setting by accident.

▪The cut part of the PTO out shaft, as well as the form and kind of splines on the shaft for a 540 rpm .

▪The cut part of the PTO out shaft, as well as the form and kind of splines at a 1000 rpm setting.

▪The shaft for 540 rpm has 6 splines, whereas the shaft for 1000 rpm has 21 splines.

#Setting of speed

▪This rpm speed setting is typically for a 34 setting of the tractor’s hand accelerator.

▪For a tractor engine with a peak torque at a specific rpm, commonly referred to as the engine’s rated speed.

▪The engine’s rated speed, at which it produces the most torque, is usually found at the 34 position of the accelerator. This is demonstrated in the example below.

▪For example, a diesel engine in a 35 horsepower tractor produces roughly 150 Nm at nearly 1700 rpm. The engine’s maximum rpm normally settles around 2200 rpm.

▪When the accelerator is dragged down to the 34 position, the best torque is generally obtained. The gearbox receives this 1700 rpm signal.

▪The main to counter shaft speed reduction is such that the counter shaft rotates at 540 rpm for this specified engine speed. The PTO is the extension of this rpm to the back side.
